Criminal Law Is Different

Criminal Law is a very complex area of law. Criminal law is evolving and punishment is becoming more extreme. Many attorneys maintain a general practice wherein they handle cases from a number of different areas of law, such as divorce, bankruptcy, immigration, business and probate. Attorney James Sullivan believes in providing effective representation in all aspects of criminal and juvenile law. To provide such representation, he regularly attends continuing legal education (CLE) courses on criminal and juvenile law. These courses cover a wide spectrum of criminal and juvenile cases, such as DWI, sex offenses, homicide, white collar crime and search and seizure laws. He also stays informed of recent changes in the law by reading current state and federal appellate court decisions.

Texas law does not require adults to be represented by an attorney, however there is a lot of truth in the old saying that a person who represents himself has a fool for an attorney. Great care should be taken in selecting an attorney who can effectively represent you in criminal court. Even seemingly simple cases can involve complex legal issues that a general practitioner may not be familiar with and therefore the otherwise defensible case may result in probation or jail time instead of a dismissal or not guilty verdict.
Attorney James Sullivan is just as passionate about his adult clients receiving proper legal representation and justice in criminal court as he is for the juveniles. It is not just when adults go to criminal court and are not properly represented. It is not just when adults pay exorbitant legal fees in exchange for false hope and empty promises. Adults usually are responsible for more than just themselves. Their spouses and their children depend upon them. They and their families deserve better. The old saying that you get what you pay for is true, however Sullivan strives to be accessible to the middle class. He certainly charges more than the inexperienced attorneys who plead their clients guilty but he does charge less than the large firm attorneys who have thousands of dollars  in monthly overhead expenses to cover. In order to devote plenty of time to each case, he limits the number of new clients they accepts each month.
Attorney James Sullivan has been practicing criminal and juvenile law since 1994. Sullivan is one of the select few attorneys Board Certified in Juvenile Law in Texas. He has tried to a jury and won acquittals for such serious felony cases as aggravated robbery, negligent homicide, burglary of a habitation and aggravated assault. He also has had numerous felony and misdemeanor cases dismissed on the day of trial for such felony and misdemeanor offenses as aggravated sexual assault of a child, aggravated robbery, indecency with a child, aggravated assault, possession of a controlled substance, DWI, carrying a weapon, evading by motor vehicle, evading detention, prostitution and theft.
